One of Megadeth's best videos, and one of their best songs, "Train of Consequences", from the record "Youthanasia".

Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction

Artist: Megadeth
Record: Countdown to Extinctions
Published: Capitol, 1992

This is a big one. One of the biggest. Perhaps even THE biggest, in my humble opinion. Am I biting over more than I can chew? I don't think so.

This record is completely without dull parts. Each and every song on this album would be one of the best songs on any Megadeth album. "Countdown to Extinction" is packed with awesome riffs (few make cooler riffs than Dave Mustaine!), great songs, fast and furious solos, great lyrics, melodies that just stick in your ears, Dave's angry vocals, perfect timing...

The lyrics are well written. Dave Mustaine always write well, but this time he out-did himself! After listening to "Captive honor" I'm pretty sure you'll try avoiding spending time in jail any time soon... Another example is the title cut, which is about the "brave" trophy hunters, killing species threatened by extinction simply... ...because they can.

Megadeth has made several good records both before and after this one, but "Countdown to extinction" is Megadeth's most successful album -- this is high quality metal throughout the record.

Highlights
On such a complete album as this one, selecting highlights is very difficult, but it's hard do avoid songs like "Symphony of destruction", "Sweating bullets" and the title cut, "Countdown to extinction".

This is simply a must-have!

Allen / Lande - The Revenge

Artist : Allen / Lande
Record : The Revenge
Published : Frontiers 2007

"The Battle" from 2005 was for me that years best melodic classic heavy metal album. Two of the greatest vocalists together with the fantastic guitar hero Magnus karlsson , amazing album .

And here we have the follow up , "The Revenge". Question : If something works , why should you try to fix it..? Again heavy and catchy melodic songs with Jørn and Russell going at it , 12 songs , 6 together and 6 divided between the both of them .And we all know Magnus Karlsson is a wizard when it comes to creating music, so all in all , it might not be as strong as the first album , but its still one of this years strongest releases in its genre.Any melodic metal fan will find this album worth investing in , no doubt about it.

Katatonia - Live Consternation

Artist : Katatonia
Album : Live Consternation (cd\dvd)
Published : SPD 2007

Finally a live documentation from the swedish masters of melody & melancholy.

Personaly Im a little disapointed that they dont play "My Twin " from recent album "The great cold distance" . But there will allways be a discussion about wich songs you prefer to get live when it comes to a band with such a strong backcatalog .Except for this , the song selection is in my opinion solid , and Jonas Renkse and his fellow musicians give us a good performance., though not very exciting visually ,The band plays the music and thats it.
Another thing is the lenght of the show , only 51 minutes , but its 51 minutes of quality , no need to skip anything here . . (Ref Manowar Review..) The sound and the picture quality are also very good , this together with the nice box and the cool cover makes this a "must have" for any Katatonia fan , and its also a great introduction to everyone that has not heard any of Katatonias music before. Highly Recommended !

Note : You get both the cd and the dvd in this box , for the price of a cd , not bad

Manowar - Gods of War

Artist : Manowar
Record : Gods of war
Published : PGM 2007

The first of a series of concept albums dedicated to different war gods from bla bla bla . . z z z z z z z z . . . . . .

Some of the songs here are ok . "King of Kings" are just like we all like Manowar. But the rest of it ? skip , skip , skip , skip .Ridiculous over dramatic epic crap , overtures after overtures , stupid interludes , and when you think its finally over , whats next ? Oh , another overture .

Stay clear , go and pull out "Hail to England" , "Battle Hyms" or any other Manowar album in your collection instead of this rubbish.

And thats about all the time I will spend writing about it.

Kvinesdal Rock Festival - Saturday July 14

Skipped Friday this year , according to people who was there , Sebastian Bach did an outstanding job , Jorn performed solid as usual , and the big surprise for many was SABATON , who did one hell of a show . Looking forward to see them when I get the chance , Karmøygeddon next year perhaps . . ?

Allright , on to Saturdays program :

First out was Communic , And these guys ROCK !
Playing killer songs from both albums , "Conspiracy in mind" and "Waves of visual decay" , its amazing how three guys can sound like this , fantastic ! Not so many people watching , shit weather , but still a good performance , great band .

Next up , Triosphere !
The coolest female vocalist in the world together with three of the nicest guys around , playing songs from debuth album "Onwards" .
Again , not so many people and shit weather , + some sound trouble . But despite all this , great performance , If you dont already own a copy of "Onwards" , go get it , its great.

Next up was The Cumshots , not really anything I payed much attention too , but they did a great cover version of Metallicas "Seek and destroy" !
The Carburetors after that , The guys played their usual straight forward Rock & Roll , ok music to drink some beer to.

Freak Kitchen was next up , and these guys caught me by surprise ! Three guys from sweden having fun and playing a mix between classic metal, prog, heavy, power etc . . Not sure how to describe it , but they made me forget about the rain and did a great performance , I will run out and get all their albums ASAP !

(Sorry for the poor picture quality , blame it on the weather..)

Next up was the Iron Maiden Tribute band Moonchild . What can I say , Vocalist Tony from Thunderbolt could easily replace Bruce , killer voice. This together with a great band and classic Maiden songs , it simply could not go wrong , again , fantastic concert !

And Then . . . . . the mighty KAMELOT

March of mephisto , soul society , Mourning star , The haunting , abandoned , Memento Mori , When the lights are down . . .

Do I really need to say more ..?

Never seen them live ? Go get DVD "One cold winters night" , fantastic DVD , captures the spirit of Kamelot Live . (Not the same as acctually being there , but a small comfort..)

Next up TNT , went back to the hotel because I was afraid they were going to play songs from the new album . . .

DAD , to late for me , nighty nighty . .

Dark Tranquillity - Fiction

Artist : Dark Tranquillity
Record : Fiction
Published : EMI 2007
Melodic Death Metal veterans Dark Tranquillity has been a trusted supplier of quality music ever since they gave us "projector" back in 1999.
And "Fiction" are no exception .
Again its the perfect mix between Mikael Stannes brutal Death metal voice and melodic music. This time there is again some female vocals + clean vocals from Mr Stanne , wich makes the album even more enjoyable.
The keybords also plays a big role on the album without being "over the top" , but rather to create a certain majestic atmosphere to the songs . But dont worry , its still very heavy and brutal at times , just the way we want it . "Fiction" confirms Dark Tranquillity's position as one of the top melodic death metal bands around , one can only sit back and enjoy , and look forward to what they will come up with next .
Dark Tranquillity are playing in Oslo Norway September 12 , See you all there ! !
